In this seminar, we will analyze the specific sound strategies, technologies, and conventions that constitute the unique soundscapes associated with the genre of horror in films such as Alien (1979), The Babadook (2014), Berberian Sound Studio (2012), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Cure (1997), The Exorcist (1973), It Follows (2014), [REC] (2007), The Shining (1980), Suspiria (1977), The Thing (1982), and The Witch (2016). Special attention will be given to how sound design both modulates our affective responses to and influences our interpretive reception of horror cinema.
