The Other Without, the Other Within: Global Science Fiction Film

From Georges Méliès’s A Trip to the Moon at the turn of last century to last month’s blockbuster hit, science fiction has been one of the most popular and enduring genres in film. Only in science fiction can we encounter aliens, interact with super-advanced technology, travel in time, be seduced by cyborgs, and test the limits of identity and memory. In this class, we will investigate the major themes of the science fiction genre
by discussing films from a variety of time periods and national traditions. How can science fiction film help us understand the world beyond our experience, beyond our galaxy…or even the unknown inside each of us?
