Term: Spring 2018
Vampire, Zombie, Apocalypse
This course traces the development of certain strains of horror cinema, focusing on the
monstrous figures of vampires and zombies as well as tropes of apocalypse, from folkloric
origins to novelistic reimaginings to cinematic adaptations (and their remakes).
With specific attention to the cultural anxieties about gender, race, and sexuality that [re]animate
these monsters, the course seeks to explore how authors and filmmakers have synthesized and
adapted established tropes across media to reflect the fears of their respective eras.
