Monique Balbuena and Holocaust photography

Comparative Literature Associate Professor Monique Rodrigues Balbuena has been invited to participate in the 2022 Curt C. and Else Silberman Seminar for Faculty, on Teaching Holocaust Photographs, funded by the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. Using the resources of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, this two-week interdisciplinary seminar explores methods for interpreting and contextualizing Holocaust photographs and engages in informed discussion about the ethics of showing these images in and beyond the classroom.

On a related note, Professor Balbuena was recently a Fellow of the 2022 Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University Regional Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilization at Arizona State University. The topic of this year’s institute was “Spaces and Places of the Holocaust.”
