Cinema & Sound

In this seminar, we will analyze the specific sound strategies, technologies, and conventions that constitute the unique soundscapes associated with the genres of horror and science fiction in films such as Alien (1979), Arrival (2016), Berberian Sound Studio (2012), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Cure (1997), The Exorcist (1973), Inception (2010), Psycho (1960), The Shining (1980), and The Thing (1982). Special attention will be given to how sound design both modulates our affective responses to and influences our interpretive reception of cinema.
