Fellowships for Graduate Language Study

FLAS

Description: This program provides funds for academic year and summer fellowships to IHEs in order to assist graduate students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. Students apply directly to IHEs that have received fellowship allocations from the Department of Education. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria in order to receive fellowships.

Eligibility: Citizen, national or permanent resident of the United States

Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace

Description: Middlebury College is pleased to announce The Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages. These 100 fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from Kathryn Davis to address today’s critical need for increased language proficiency in the United States. For the fourth year in a row, 100 Davis Fellowships are offered to cover the full cost of summer language study from beginner to graduate levels in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian at the Middlebury College Language Schools. Fellowship grants cover the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury summer Language Schools.

Eligibility: The Davis Fellowships are merit-based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution.

ACLS East European Study Program

Description: The American Council of Learned Societies offers grants of up to $2,500 each for intensive summer study of Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, or Slovene.

Applicants may request support for elementary, intermediate, or advanced language study, or for attendance at advanced-mastery language courses sponsored by ACLS.

Eligibility: Awards are intended primarily for people who will use these languages in academic research or teaching.

Gary E. Smith Summer Professional Development Award

Description: $3,000 award for up to three outstanding master's or doctoral students pursuing academic, professional development, or training enrichment opportunities during Summer 2009. The activity would provide unique academic opportunities not normally available as part of the student's degree program.

Eligibility: Must be registered as full time students at the time of application and be returning as full time students in the Fall.

David L. Boren Scholarship

Description: Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. citizens to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Awards are up to $10,000 for a semester and $20,000 for the academic year. Includes a service requirement following graduation.

Eligibility: U.S. Citizen
