NEWS

John T. Lysaker, head of the UO Philosophy Department and COLT Program Faculty member, is a 2007-08 Recipient of the UO Fund for Faculty Excellence. A phenomenally successful teacher, Professor Lysaker's research ranges across disciplines and genres, from aesthetics to psychology to critical theory. Lysaker’s second book, Emerson and Self-Culture (Indiana UP, 2008) has been called “subtle, probing and insightful” and examines, through the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the attempt to remain true to one’s commitments.  His third book, "Schizophrenia and the Fate of Self," co-authored with a clinical psychologist, is under contract with Oxford University Press.

Faculty

The Comparative Literature Program (COLT) is administered by the Program Faculty, which includes a core of permanently appointed faculty members as well as faculty drawn from related departments serving fixed-term appointments to the Program. Joining the Program Faculty are a wonderful cohort of visiting professors and post-doctoral instructors who routinely teach some of our most popular courses. Our graduate student teaching fellows (GTFs) receive superb teaching training across campus in language instruction, English composition and in translation theory. Our GTFs assist in the teaching of our intro level courses, design world literature courses of their own and collaborate with and mentor our undergraduate majors. Finally, a large committee of Participating Faculty members from other departments are actively involved in the life of the Program. Ultimately our Participating Faculty are our greatest resource: they teach COLT courses, advise COLT undergraduates and graduate students, and participate in COLT events. These faculty members represent not only the many literatures taught at Oregon but also such disciplines as anthropology, art history, geography, history, and philosophy.
